What is a Makerspace in Education?

A makerspace is where students come together to build, tinker, explore, and invent. Makerspaces create lasting meaning, foster innovation, and make a positive impact.
A makerspace is not defined by the tools available or the size of the actual space but by the pedagogy involved in enabling students to innovate and create. Best practice is to design maker opportunities that align to curriculum, define the objective/intent, but do not confine creativity or choreograph the outcome. The most critical factor in a successful, sustainable makerspace is implementation of the learning culture and community.

Why MakerHappen workshops?

MakerHappen is designed to support EC-12 teachers in all content areas, librarians, and administrators in the understanding and implementation of educational MakerSpace. We provide information and coaching support for creation, content building, formative assessment through feedback, and more. Workshops are designed around the 4 L’s (Location, Leading, Letting Go, Learning). All participants will receive a pdf copy of MakerHappen: An Educator’s guide to MakerSpace in the Classroom.  Learning is hands-on and provides authentic experiences for participants to immediately take back and implement. We offer tools to help engage your students, scaffold the learning process, and keep you organized whether your students are learning virtually or face-to-face.
