Strengthening Tier 1 Reading Instruction Series: The Six Syllable Types
Online Course, Self-directed
3.00 CPE Credits
$30.00

In this video online course, you will view and practice modeled instruction of the six syllable patterns of English words, and learn how to guide applied practice with various multisensory activities.  The instruction is designed to introduce the syllable patterns to students in approximately 5 minutes, and then embed multisensory practice within a word study block of an ELA (TEKS-based) curriculum with Kindergarten through 2nd grade students.  All teachers can enhance their vocabulary instruction of struggling readers once they are exposed to the knowledge of the six syllable patterns.  Teachers who are English Language Learners may also find that knowledge of the six syllable patterns unlocks the mystery of how to pronounce, decode and spell English words.

This course is part of an online course video series in which you will learn powerful, evidence-based reading strategies with guidance on how to integrate into ELA lessons. Each course is a video of a complete face-to-face workshop facilitated by Jennifer Johnson, the Director of 504 Services, Dyslexia, RtI, and PreK in Comal ISD. In the videos, Jennifer explicitly models and inspires effective reading instruction. This series includes a multitude of engaging and fun activities for teachers of students K-2, or students who are just beginning to read, ELs included. Each course includes free downloadable instructional materials and links to valuable resources. These courses can also be used to prepare for the Science of Teaching Reading (STR) exam.
