Author’s Purpose in Poetry

Figuring out how to teach author’s purpose and message in poetry is one of the most difficult tasks secondary ELAR teachers face during the school year. While annotation techniques like TP-CASTT or SIFT can guide students in what to look for while reading a poem, going deeper to draw conclusions around the author's intentions requires greater exploration and experience as an author oneself. In this self-paced session, learners will investigate poems through structure, blending, and levels of meaning. Participants will leave with poetry activity tools for instructional application.

In this course, participants will:

  • Connect poetry blending and writing to author’s purpose
  • Engage in a poem arrangement activity to analyze the relationship between structure and author’s purpose
  • Explore levels of meaning in poetry
  • Use digital interactive tools to support understanding in author’s purpose in poetry
